A Wilderness Program This Summer Can Help Your Child with ADHD

Children with ADHD are often restless, hyperactive, and have difficulty completing tasks or focusing on a project. They are sometimes disruptive or impulsive. Many children with ADHD are extremely bright and capable. They often excel at certain skills, while having great difficulties with others. Their behavior can often cause painful social and academic consequences.

Children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder often benefit highly from wilderness programs. Why is this? The need for focused attention on challenging tasks in a controlled group setting allows ADD kids to hone not only their skills of concentration, but their social skills. The group serves as a positive peer environment. The group experience, when facilitated by experienced counselors, allows ADHD kids to learn how to better interpret feedback from their peers and adjust their behavior appropriately.

Many of our programs allow the parent to participate in their child's progress through our Parent Extranet. This feature, unique to Aspen programs, allows you to log in and view progress reports and other updates online while your child is enrolled in a program.

SUWS Youth & Adolescent - Shoshone, Idaho

Why do kids with ADD/ADHD seem to thrive at SUWS? Location, location, location! The unique SUWS location/environment, with its high level of structure, small group sizes, "cause and effect" curriculum, and relationship/positive reinforcement approach makes for an ideal setting to begin building healthier coping behaviors and interpersonal skills. Our model affords much-needed structure and consistency regarding the treatment team, peer group dynamics, and provides a sense of completion. Many parents prefer the shorter stay outdoor education provides. Students complete the program on average in 28 days. Turn-About Ranch - Escalante, Utah

Turn-About Ranch is a working ranch located in Escalante Utah. This unique environment allows students to work with horses and care for other animals as a therapeutic approach to behavioral and emotional issues.

ADD/ADHD students can gain a great deal from a hands-on animal program. Turn-About Ranch has developed an ideal location, a working cattle ranch, for this to take place. Daily life includes many events where students are working with their hands, spending pent up energy that gets in the way when they need to work through the issues. The routine for ADD/ADHD students helps them feel more comfortable in a controlled environment, where rules, boundaries and schedules are similar every day. The therapeutic system that includes both group and individual counseling also has the ability to work with these students on an as-needed basis. While on a trail ride, fixing a fence, painting the garage, taking a hike, feeding the animals, the potential for dealing with issues in a non-threatening situation works very well. Many of the ADD/ADHD issues include working on impulsivity, improving study skills, increasing awareness of peers and social cues. At Turn-About Ranch, your child will experience the necessary components that will teach him/her how to work through these issues successfully and how to retain the necessary tools to continue to do so later in life. We have had great success with self-esteem issues, hurt and pain resulting from unhealthy relationships, rebellious, defiant and manipulative behaviors that lead to trouble for youth and their families.
